3/30/2024 0 Comments Best scenery in flightgear![]() Many thanks to the developers of this project and its aircraft. My list gives an idea about what I like and is by no means exclusive. If anybody has other suggestions to add please do so. I am an aircraft mechanic and have experience in general aviation, airliners and commercial simulators, so from my perspective, here are my favorites (in no particular order): Together with the release of Flightgear 3. It performs a similar function to TerraGear, but in a different way. USA, Tennessee: custom scenery for Tennessee by Scott Giese(xDraconianx). FlightGear Scenery Designer ( aka fgsd ) is a tool to design and create custom-made scenery tiles suitable to FlightGear. See How to install custom scenery packages. The triangular terrain mesh has some information like land class encoded in each triangle. This is only a fraction of available scenery (May 2021). The scenery is split into 1 x 1 degree scenery tiles. Very nice is B777, but flight dynamic is not absolutly perfect. ![]() Maybe my time investment can help others with a similar goal. The scenery in FlightGear consists of a terrain mesh, terrain materials (which includes textures) and scenery objects. V12 wrote in Sat 5:19 am: Boeing 707 is nice and very good. Try starting FlightGear at LEBL and check if the scenery appears. I thought I would share those that I have found to be the most enjoyable, realizing that this is a PC flight simulator and I only have a joystick, so ultimate realism is not going to exist for me but I find these aircraft to be the most immersive and well developed with some very realistic details, interaction and visuals. In FlightGear 2016.2 and later, the default scenery will change at each release - for 2016.2.1 (the version youre on), it is LEBL, and KSFO is not installed by default anymore. I've spent considerable time trying to find what I feel are the most realistic aircraft in Flightgear. You will also need to have TerraSync enabled to that the models get downloaded and updated.One of my favorite aspects of a flight simulator is realism. For Unix-based operating systems (like Linux or MacOS), run gen-symlinks.sh once from the directory where it appears for Windows, run gen-symlinks.bat (not tested, since the scenery creator does not use Windows). Included are the latest scenery tiles available for FlightGear at time of publishing. To make 3D models and osm2city (roads, buildings, and powerlines) appear, you need to run a script once after installation to generate symbolic links to the TerraSync scenery. It was begun in 2022, and version 1.0 was release in January 2024. ![]() For FlightGear 2020. This doesnt mean it needs good textures but it should have all switches and gauges working and you should not need the flightgear menus for operating it. A limited set of scenery comes installed with FlightGear. This is what I consider a well made jet to have: - Realistic cockpit. If you are having trouble running FlightGear, see Graphics drivers configuration for more information. Updating the OSM database for an area will result in improved scenery. FlightGear runs best with current OpenGL video drivers. A shapefile is a proprietary spatial information format. In order to add custom scenery to FlightGear, you must create a custom shapefile. The airports come from a more-recent snapshot of the X-Plane Scenery Gateway, so they are more up-to-date than the ones in the default FlightGear distro, and there are many more of them. FlightGear 2020.3.7 added OSM2City output for the whole planet to automatically downloaded scenery. Custom terrain in FlightGear is currently generated through processing shapefiles with TerraGear. This scenery has detailed coastlines and waterways, together with basic roads, railroads, and powerline rights-of-way, all from OpenStreetMap (to be supplemented by osm2city).
